中秋竹编小舟
Bamboo Boat Weaving

  • Date: September 18th, Friday
  • Time: 7–9pm
  • Location: UMass Amherst University Village Community Center

We’ll be making a handcrafted bamboo boat inspired by the Mid-Autumn moon. Using bamboo strips, thread, flowers, decorative elements, and a soft light strip, participants will create their own unique piece to take home.

Bamboo weaving is one of China’s oldest traditional crafts, valued for its balance of beauty, patience, and craftsmanship. This workshop offers a relaxed and accessible way to experience the art while creating something meaningful by hand.

The event is family-friendly and open to all skill levels. No prior experience is needed, and all materials will be provided.

We will also share mooncakes and Chinese tea throughout the evening.

Come spend this Mid-Autumn with us—make something beautiful, enjoy tea and mooncakes, and share a warm evening with family, friends, and community.

🌕 Event Recap

Our community came together for a warm and meaningful Mid-Autumn Bamboo Boat Weaving Workshop, celebrating traditional craftsmanship, creativity, and togetherness. Throughout the evening, participants explored the beauty of bamboo weaving, learned about its cultural meaning, and transformed simple bamboo strips into glowing boats filled with flowers, tassels, and good wishes.

🎋 Discovering the Art of Bamboo Weaving

We began the workshop with a presentation introducing the long tradition of Chinese bamboo weaving.

Through photos and videos, participants explored how bamboo is selected, split, trimmed, and woven into objects of many different scales—from baskets and chairs to delicate decorative pieces and large artistic installations. We also looked at how bamboo can be combined with other materials, including ceramics, to create both functional and artistic works.

🌕 Bamboo, Lanterns & Mid-Autumn Wishes

Before beginning our own creations, we explored the meaning behind the materials and designs. We talked about the connection between lanterns and the Mid-Autumn Festival, as well as bamboo’s cultural symbolism of resilience, strength, and flexibility. For this workshop, the glowing bamboo boat became a vessel for good wishes—a small light carrying hopes for happiness, reunion, and a beautiful year ahead.

🪢 Weaving Our Bamboo Boats

Then the hands-on process began. Participants selected their bamboo strips, decided the length and shape of their boats, and carefully started weaving the structure. Once the basic form was complete, the ends were tied together to give each boat its final shape. Every boat developed its own character as participants experimented with different sizes, patterns, and weaving styles.

Next came the most colorful part of the workshop. Participants selected flowers, tassels, and decorative lights to personalize their boats. Seeing the tables gradually fill with creations in different colors, shapes, and styles was truly joyful. Although everyone began with the same basic materials, no two finished boats looked exactly alike.

✨ Bringing the Moon to Ourselves

At the end of the evening, everyone gathered around the table with their finished boats. We turned off the room lights and illuminated them together. In the darkness, dozens of small lights glowed across the table—each one handmade, each one carrying its own wishes.

For a brief moment, it felt as though we had brought the moon a little closer to ourselves. Through our hands, we created. Through gathering, we connected. And through making together, we found a way to cherish and carry tradition forward.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and filled the evening with creativity, laughter, and light.
